Best known for his non-fiction about life as an English ex-pat living in Provence, Peter Mayle has also written several books of fiction including Hotel Pastis. Fans of Mayle's non-fiction books such as A Year in Provence will be happy to discover that he has not left any of the usual provencal flavor out of his fiction. In addition to sensual descriptions of local cuisine and a varied cast of rural, provencal characters, Mayle has added romance and a view of the seedier side of his adopted home.

From London to Provence

Simon Shaw is a wealthy, successful, recently divorced advertising executive living in London. Despite his continued success, he feels that something is lacking. The endless succession of meetings, flights to New York, and backstabbing co-workers has Simon questioning whether it is all worth it. Ernest, the "indespensible manager of Simon's existence" comments that Simon is looking "peaky" and suggests a much needed vacation. At first, Simon balks at the idea, but after continuous badgering from Ernest, he decides that maybe a trip to Saint-Tropez might be a cure.

After listening to advice from a friend in Paris, Simon decides to skip Saint-Tropez and go to the Luberon; an area of rural Provence located between Avignon and Aix. He thinks that maybe the quiet of the country might suit him better than the Cote d'Azur. Nearing his final destination of Cavaillon, he breaks the exhaust pipe on his car.
